How to pack ineffectively

Liam and I had possession of our house last week, yet somehow we have still not moved in due to being the slowest, laziest packers on the planet. Actually he’s been very good, it’s really just me. I’ve never moved before, so I’m only just discovering the pain that is packing your life away into boxes.

I’m trying to downsize as much as possible so I don’t have immense piles of crap cluttering up my new house… crap that I’ve dragged around since childhood. I’ve been mentally preparing for it for a few months, so some things are easy to get rid of.. others not so much. In any case it’s been more time consuming than I thought, especially since I have the attention span of a nat. This is the method that I’ve been using to pack:

1. Get box and go to room to be packed
2. Place one item into box
3. Take a break
4. Look at box
5. Have a coffee
6. Look at more items
7. Get really tired
8. Take a nap
9. Repeat next day

Can you see my predicament? At this rate it’ll be winter again before I’m in the house.

  1. I’ve always had simplified packing. If it’s not my books, bookshelves, bed, TV, or video games, there’s a dumpster for that. And honestly the bed is optional. I’ve got a bed roll and sleeping bag and have no issues with spartan living. So long as I’m surrounded with my books, it’s home. Though perhaps at least get one or two boxes done before break time πŸ˜‰ Good luck with the move!

  2. There is an alternative, taereh: lose it all. Give everything away or sell out. Move to your new place with a wholly fresh set of, as you put it, “crap.” Crapping up the new place with new crap might be the way to go. You could do it leisurely, keeping the coffee and the naps a part of your routine. You would move in faster, too. LMAO

  3. When I moved from my sister’s place to my own apartment, I lingered a bit because I had a few weeks to move. I ultimately moved within a few days – just across town. It was really nice to take my time.

However, it is still hard to get the motivation to pack a box and stay organized.

    1. Yeah I didn’t even think about the organization part. I’m rushing around to go to work in the morning and trying to find stuff I need in boxes… can’t wait until the house is a proper house and not a disaster zone.

  4. Taehreh, this all sounds painfully familiar. I have moved many times and it never gets any better for me. πŸ˜‰ We are getting ready to move again, and I too am downsizing… I should be packing yet here I am.
Good luck with your move, and thank you for visiting me today!

    1. Thanks Lynda! I’m working today to unload as many boxes as possible and get rid of as many unneeded things as I can… I’m creeping closer to sanity. Good luck to you for your upcoming move πŸ™‚

  5. goddess in hate moving house. Every time I move I renew my hatred of it. I seem to spend most of my time once i’m i’m a house trying to get rid of all my stuff.
